Horse Time

Vintage pocket watch and wristwatch parts, rescued copper wire, velvet and opal matrix stone.

The ancient Celts are said to have valued their horses highly and were alleged to have designated dates for safe travel that were designated “Horse Time”. Hence the title of this sculpture.

Some pieces seem to magically come together for me and others fight me until both the creation and I come to a satisfactory truce. This horse certainly behaved like a strong willed stallion during his construction. At one early stage, he looked more like a cow than a horse, which made neither of us happy!

The finished article is designed as a keepsake, with the rear of the watch case opening to form a velvet lined compartment. Etching on the rear lid shows that the original watch was serviced in 1892 and again in 1898. Ten time pieces contributed to Horse Time.
